Archdiocese settlements by the numbers

$720 million
Total paid by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles in two sex abuse settlements in 2006 and 2007.

$292 million
The archdiocese's share of those two settlements. Other portions were covered by insurers and religious orders.

$175 million
Amount the archdiocese borrowed from Allied Irish Bank to help pay the settlements.

$117 million
Amount the archdiocese raised selling investments to pay the settlements.

$50 million
Amount the archdiocese expects will remain outstanding even after it sells extensive property holdings. The archdiocese has turned to parishes to help raise some of this amount.
