The Settlement

At the "Special Deanery Meetings" that recently took place, Cardinal Mahony himself asked ALL Parishes to hand over 75% of their liquid assets to the Archdiocese to be used to help pay off the sexual abuse settlement. Yes, you read that correctly, seventy-five percent. He asked that each individual Parish give a grant - in other words a gift - of an amount equal to 25% of the Parish's total liquid assets. He then asked for each Parish to give the Archdiocese an "interest-free" loan for an amount equal to 50% of the Parish's total liquid assets.

When you add these two amounts together, you will see that the Archdiocese is telling its Parishes to give the Archdiocese 75% of their assets!

So what does this mean to you as a Catholic? It means that 75% of the hard-earned money you give to the Archdiocese is going to help pay off the Archdiocese's sexual abuse settlement! If you are as disturbed about this as we are, we ask that you join us in our effort to save Daniel Murphy High School. Cardinal Mahony, even after publicly promising that no Parish property or school would be sold to pay off the settlement, is closing the school so he can sell the property and use the proceeds to help pay off the settlement. This is just not right. Catholic education should be the absolute LAST thing to be affected by this settlement! Haven't there been enough victims at the hands of the Archdiocese? Closing Daniel Murphy High School would add 231 dedicated, honest, hard-working students to the growing list of victims. We can't let this happen.

Please join us in our effort to keep this fine school open. Up until now, Cardinal Mahony has refused to talk to us. He's refused to listen to our plan to keep the school open and financially stable. He has turned a deaf ear on our pleas for communication. This is no way for a Shepherd to lead his flock.

We feel there is an overall sense of disappointment among the Catholic community with Mahony's leadership and if we took a vote of "No Confidence" now, it would pass resoundingly.

If you feel the same way we do and would like to help our cause, we are asking all Catholics in the Archdiocese to withhold their usual tithings or donations to the Archdiocese. Instead, please click here to download our tithing form that you can use to send a message to Cardinal Mahony that you will not contribute to the church until the school is saved. Print extra copies of this form and give them to your friends and family to use as well. Together, we can make a difference.

If enough parishioners use this form on a weekly basis, our message will be heard, loud and clear.
